Kiffin Yates Rockwell was born on September 20, 1892 in Newport, Tennessee. After his father died from typhoid fever. Him, his brother(Paul) and his mom(Loula Ayres) moved many times before they settled in Ashville, North Carolina. While Kiffin was young his family told him stories of how his grandparents fought in the American Civil War and was told on battles they fought.
He was taught how to fish, hunt, and horse riding. He attended the Ashville High School between 1906 and 1908. In the fall of 1908 he enrolled in the Virginia Military Institute but in the fall of 1909 he left and joined the United States Naval Academy. After taking preliminary courses he decided to join his brother Paul at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. In 1912 he left to see the world, he went to western Canada and then settled in San Francisco where he opened a Advertising Agency.
